Solaris (2002)

Unlike the Tarkovsky version, this one doesn’t require 3 hours and an ego death to enjoy. Soderbergh is an auteur in his own right and at his most artistically assured here. Haunting, romantic, doomed. Beautifully threatening, like the swirling gases of an alien atmosphere. Also, lots of hot people.

The sound design, the shot choices, the almost sci-fi looking settings, Monica Vitti's performance as an archetypal modern subject, this movie has it all and more. "I wonder if there's some place in this world where people go to get better. Probably not. "

Children of Men

(minor spoilers, I guess?) a few long take bangers in this film, but the battle scene near the end is so goddamn good. follow Clive Owen and the pregnant young woman in his care as they get caught in a skirmish between two warring factions. Cuarón is the best.
