not sure if its ACTUALLY my favorite, but this is always the first thing that pops into my head. SHOCKINGLY great live performance from blink, tom's guitar work on this one is incredible, especially without having another guitarist to back him up, mark's vocals are on point, and travis fucking EXPLODES. so dynamic, so powerful, the peak of their "emo" era and definitely helped kickstart my love for the cure / songwriting / music in general at a young age.

There aren’t many bands or songs out there you can point to and say “this changed my life” but this band and song did. It contains one of the dirtiest guitar licks ever recorded, an earworm of melody and noise. They helped me discover the Velvet Underground 🍌(and kick-started the so-called Paisley Underground movement that gave birth to the Bangles among others). My band could even play this song and it sounded BOSS (not every cover did, ha). So simple anyone could play it; but only THEY could write it. I wrote about the PaIsley Underground years later for Magnet: https://magnetmagazine.com/2001/05/18/one-nation-underground-the-story-of-the-paisley-underground/ God bless Steve Wynn and Co 🎶 this one's still a keeper many decades later.

If you're anything like me (a weakling from New Jersey filled with angst and anxiety) this was a very important album growing up. I remember finding it around like 8th grade or Freshman year of high school and becoming absolutely obsessed. In my sheltered New Jersey punk mind I thought the Ergs were as big as The Beatles. I just remembered the album today and am realizing people might not actually know about it. So if you're into punky, fun, poppy sad songs from 2004 check it out.

i can’t stress this enough- one of my absolute favorite moments in all of recorded music. the impact how he chose to sing this line is, to me, unreal. idk music theory like i should, plz correct me if i’m wrong af here, but he ends on what i believe we’d call a run of descending leading tones, a decision that is somehow both melodic and harmonic, somehow both boyishly nasal and hugely epic. to be clear, i do not mean his massive moment that carries us through to key change. while epic, this is not where he ultimately gets me. i’m specifically and exclusively referring to “don’t wanna hear you say” at 2:34. also, to end on one of my only spicy takes, i think it’s worth noting that there’s no real debate to be had in the category of “bsb vs. n’sync.” don’t let jt’s talent and the cultural tidal wave of “bye bye bye” fool you, bsb always had the songs, bsb always had the rizz, bsb always had and will always have my vote, and i will gladly throw digital hands with any n’sync stans who wanna get scrappy.
