There were few artists as prolific as Cooper B. Handy (LUCY) in 2024. And as you’ll see on this list, a lot of people wanted to write about his music. I saw this comment about Cooper in a forum, “It kinda feels like alternative hip hop equivalent of the C86 genre in 80s' alt-rock,” which kind of sums up a feeling I've been unable to articulate about the magic of LUCY. If you don't get it ... I feel sad for you. Whether it’s Vol. 9, his project Safe Mind with Gus of Boy Harsher, or his Surf Gang album JACK & THE BEANSTOCK— you really can’t go wrong. It’s all amazing. 100% PROD I.V. is my personal favorite. I love the guitar and harmonica sprinkled throughout, it’s nu americana perfected. Cooper is a modern folk hero and among my home state’s best exports (Jonathan Richman and Evan Dando)

Favorite album this year so far, by a long shot. And it's probably Cooper's best. I saw this comment in a forum It kinda feels like alternative hip hop equivalent of the C86 genre in 80s' alt-rock which kind of sums up a feeling I've been unable to articulate about the magic of LUCY if you don't get it ... i feel sad for you so much charm. so much love special music

as the years go by i realized how much this dude has inspired me. somehow his songs captures the essence of night time, syrupy mysterious nocturnal grooves. it’s hard to recommend a proper entry point into his catalogue too, because there’s so much and to me it’s all good. though i always fall back on his solo records “bete noir” & “boys & girls.” it has the super hit “slave to love” obviously - but the other tracks are just as juicy - “windswept“ is a personal fav. each song features a different heavy hitter guitarist from the era too - which is why i’m so obsessed with it. he’s like a sweaty laid back lounge singer serenading you at 3AM, meanwhile these guitarists are just shredding behind him. last saturday, i played a show and to get myself in the zone, i popped on “boys & girls” on the drive over. when i finished my set, a friend asked about the drum machine in one song and i said i took a cue from ferry and he recommended his 2010 record “olympia” which i somehow had never heard and now i’m currently obsessed with it. when i was packing up my gear the dj just put on another track of his. the next day at work, to sustain my post-show high i put on roxy music, and a customer i usually never talk to wound up sticking around telling me how much they love him. anyways i love that he‘s kind of my spirit guide following me around at the moment and highly recommend doing a deep dive into his world if you haven’t done so already…

Tommy Newport: i honestly dont think this guy can make a bad song but i recommend his ep Liquid, i think every song on there is amazing. some of my personal fav songs in general are; Vanilla and Light, Warp Speed Suzie, Bad Choice My Boy, Violet Days and one of his more recent releases Tangerine Jawny: i have both his ep For Abby and album It's Never Fair, Always True on vinyl and theyre both really good! some of my fav songs are; Trigger of Love, Best Thing, death is a dj, giving up on you and selfish hate those are the two i feel the most confident recommending, if you end up looking into them i would love to know what you think!

tomorrow PI.FYI launches to the public this project is the result of thousands of hours spent coding everything from scratch after I got laid off six months ago no thiel-bucks or weirdo outsider money, just a pure desire to make something fun and true to Perfectly Imperfect’s day one goal of helping people find new things from real human beings, not algorithms or AI a pure labor of love that I’ve been quietly plotting for two years and it’s completely self-funded from my (rapidly) dwindling savings account so thank you for coming along for this weird ride 🫶 let's see where it goes
