when a movie is over, sit through to the end of the credits. everyone is so quick to stand up when a movie finishes. just sit! you don’t have to read them—you can just use the time to think back on what you liked about the movie, what was exciting, talk to your friends about what they liked. you can scan the credits for that one actor’s name that you couldn’t place. you already set aside 2+ hours to watch a movie. sit and contemplate for an additional 8 minutes and then get up and go back to the rest of your life!

This will sound sacrilegious, and of course the best way to watch a great film is to have the time to enjoy and savour it, lights out, no phone, like the cinema. BUT I realised I was often watching shitty TV shows because I just wanted to watch something for half an hour. But you can literally just watch half an hour of a film and then watch another half hour another time. Plus if you get sucked into the screen you only watch a 2 hour film rather than being stuck watching like 5 hours of a random show.

Go Don Draper mode. Decide to make the trip 45 mins before showtime. See whatever you like; no compromising on concessions; listen to the other showgoers chatter (“is he a critic?“). After it’s over, take yourself out for a drink—reflect on what you’ve seen—bathe in the melancholy of unshared cinema.

i know it’s dinner and a movie but I like going to earlier screenings - then i have the time to debrief and analyse while the movie’s still warm and fresh in my head during dinner or drinks.

its so fun to look over and see what other people are doing on their phones. are they playing a weird game? scrolling through their own camera roll? watching instagram stories? look at the faces of the people on their instagram feed. do you know any of them? i might even read a text message that someone is sending as they type it out. its way more interesting than looking at my own phone.

pomegranates are delicious. i like to eat them straight out of a bowl with a spoon, but they are also great in yogurt, on ice cream, or as a sweet addition to a cheese plate. and thats fine enough—but more than that, the act of preparing a pomegranate is slow and messy. it requires patience and focus. you must put down your phone and concentrate on completing a single task. its meditative! and at the end, a beautiful bowl of tasty pomegranate seeds awaits you. there should be a pomegranate emoji.
