a landmark record for me, the variety of the record is astounding, yet everything still feels very cohesive, this sense of journey is typically not as effectively portrayed in compilation albums such as this one, but “Lost Blues and Other Songs” pulls it off with an effortless subtlety, West Palm Beach and Gulf Shores feel like the climax of the record, but every track before and after them is equally rewarding in their own way, Ive become more and more perceptive about different things on every track, the record’s purity results in the perfect encapsulation of Oldham’s appeal

The standout hits are Slugs (my song of the summer) and Yard (truly a song worth sitting and crying to). I wouldn’t say they’re sad rock, but their songs are very reflective of past love / mistakes / recognizing your limits as a person / a long to change who you are; you can relate to the album regardless of where you’re at. They also have a little midwestern hint to their sound, and they sneak a harmonica & some banjo into Broadview, which is a nice little change of pace. I like albums that make you feel things and this one brings a sense of understanding & acceptance whenever I listen to it. Like yes, I can relate to the feelings & the pain & regret in the songs, but they’re almost written (and meant to be listened to) from the other side, once you’ve made it through those life moments and can look back at them understanding how they’ve brought you to this very moment. That’s this album for me.

I found Palace while on a deep Beach Fossils rabbit hole and I’ve had them on almost every new playlist I’ve made since. ‘When Everything Was Lost’ feels like such a great breakup / nostalgia song. And then ‘Son’ right after gives me a strange sense of hope? I think their previous albums felt a little more upbeat, or higher in spirit. But I like how Ultrasound feels different in its undertones, a little bit reflective and a little bit defeated, and yet hopeful. I think it’s a great rainy day album and start to finish it flows seamlessly.

feels like such a timeless album. i’ve returned to it so many times purely because of how unapologetic it is in terms of its angst and unconventional, “homemade” sound. escape in an album. amazing musical storytelling both in its creation of an aural landscape and in straightforward exposition.
