january’s one of my fav months; beyond general feelings of renewal, new releases slow down for a bit and it gives me the opportunity to comb my library for artists & albums i’ve neglected while trying to keep up with the zeitgeist 😵‍💫 some rapid fire picks, new and old — though only slightly! joanne robertson & dean blunt: backstage raver alison’s halo: eyedazzler sinéad o’ connor: universal mother yatta: palm wine parannoul: sky hundred i’ve also been addicted to jane remover’s newest single; with each new release i feel like we discover a new facet to her. the new ethel cain record was really good, too :)

i feel like she’s the artist who I’m most locked on the same wavelength with right now. everything that she releases I'm super into. I first heard about her years ago when a friend sent me homeswitcher off of her first project (previously released under a now defunct alias) but I didn’t really have her on my radar until 2021’s Frailty. songs like your clothes and movies for guys off that album fuse together so many sounds from rock, emo/pop punk, electronic/dance, and experimental music in a way that still feels cohesive. since then she’s been a bit of a sonic chameleon. her second album Census Designated is like pop hooks and song structures over noise rock. the track Video is especially haunting and the title song is explosive while not having any drums, just crushing waves of noise, guitars, and her voice. this year she's already released a shoegaze/grunge album under her Venturing alias that’s fantastic and very 90s rock inspired, and her third Jane Remover album drops in a month or so, the lead single JRJRJR is probably going to me my most listened to song this year by a long shot. outside of her main albums she's got an electronic mashup/remix alias, some dancefloor ready bangers under her main name, songs that are basically disney channel pop tracks over drill/rock fusion, and tracks that draw from latin music like bachata. she's one of the most versatile artists in the game rn and i'm loving all of it.

depending on the day of the week, (usually a random wednesday on which i feel the more ravenously coveted releases of SAW vol. 1&2 can be overlong and at times unwieldy), drukqs is to me the most evocative distillation of aphex’s predilection for acid-break brutalizations and madcap sonic textures. it is, somehow, one of the albums i return to most and yet one of the last i’d ever recommend to a sane individual — and ironically, one of the worst to listen to while stoned. i can’t vouch for it enough

so far, turning 24 has brought with it the sobering realization that my life won’t simply happen to me, and all the boring, healthy, ritualistic sh*t—once seeming like baseless naïveté spouted unanimously by people who had this epiphany far sooner than i—actually works. so far, 24 has been about catching up to the me that i wanted to be by now, and giving myself grace for keeping her waiting. that baboon from bojack horseman might’ve been onto something. it does get a little easier, on the condition that you keep trying. i’m gonna go make some tea
