OMG I’M OBSESSED Zines are like small magazines on topics of any type: fictional, comedic, informational, artistic, etc. You can write about anything (peek “The Cool Teen’s Guide To: Fingering”). From fingering to life crises to making herbal medicine, there’s a zine for EVERYTHING. I am trying to convince my friends to make one with me. This comes with an ASK: Does anyone have tips on how to get started??? 🤗

I’ve been making zines for the last ten years and I literally could not recommend it MORE!!!! I’m so excited for you. If you’re making one with your friends, maybe get together all make individual lists of subject matters you’d like to share with the world, then compare lists and see where the overlaps are. Me and my friend once made a venn diagram of all our interests so we could pick a new zine subject matter! I would start off doing a simple one page fold (like a beak book ) and filling it with notes / collage on the chosen subject matter… then you can see whether you’d wanna stick with that, or whether you’d need a longer format, or you’d just prefer to do it digitally. I use inDesign but there’s loads of free zine making programs, then you can find cheap printing in libraries. Theres also no shame in getting the zine printed somewhere — xerox and copy shops used to be the most accessible but that’s not really the case anymore (here anyway!). I’ve used Mixam for full colour printing, or finding a risograph printer in your area is cool (I love risograph!). Anyway I could talk forever — if you need any tips you know where to find me!

i’ve also been interested in making zines! there’s so many resources online about how to make them but what you want to put in them is up to you and thats where I can get stuck. I think you just have to start laying down your art or the information that you want to share. As a creative the start is always the hardest part haha.

Finding access to a xerox machine that’s cheap or free to use. also when I first started making zines I wanted them to be dense and jam packed and hand made and it was a little overwhelming and I never finished them. now I just make small zines and it’s much more satisfying. Currently Hand drawing all the original Pokémon by memory as an zine and it’s silly and fun. Also partially designing them on programs like procreate helps allot. And making a copy with all the page numbers so it all flows together properly and you know how to staple them together.

Start with this fold! It’s just 3 spreads and requires one sheet of paper. You can make an entire zine by yourself in an hour or less. I made more than 50 of these before I did anything more complex: https://youtu.be/keX3nBEcw2Y?feature=shared

The only way to start is to start! What would you most like to tell people?

bee1000 yes this is fundamental!! sometimes research or preparing yourself can be a form of procrastination … you are ready if you have a piece of paper, some scissors, some glue and some good music (oh along with a magazine 😝)

I adore music zines. Always loved them. I don’t mean full-on glossy magazines, though I love those, too. I mean the handmade, typewritten, toner-smeared kind made out of printer paper and staples and a burning desire to participate in a tradition of creative writing, interviewing, art-making, and whatever other form of creativity one feels like stuffing into its pages. At the moment, I’m obsessed with a few: Hallogallo, which is run out of Chicago by Kai Slater (of the bands Lifeguard and Sharp Pins) and just published its 10th issue featuring an interview with Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier; Love Injection, a long-running club culture zine by NYC’s Barbie Bertisch and Paul Raffaele; and Shadow Wolf, the handiwork of Holland-based electronic artist Legowelt.

I’ve always wanted to create something like a magazine—just without the pressure of making it an official publication. A friend suggested I try making zines since they’re DIY, community-driven, and give you the freedom to create whatever you want without limitations. That’s how Cyber Nostalgia was born —a quarterly zine featuring interviews with some of my favorite online creatives, playlist recommendations, and articles about the media that shaped my childhood. Oh, and maybeeee we throw in some stickers too. 💫The zine in the picture has a link to the digital version, but if you’d like a physical copy, you can contact us through our Instagram (@cybernostalgiastudios) 💫

I love love love making silly poems with word magnets. Working with a finite set of words is liberating in its constraints. It‘s so fun to use weird words that I don’t use in written poetry. It’s also fun to challenge myself with finding synonyms! ahhh! So fun. So fun! Plus, my poems are kind of trash but that’s the fun of it! No pressure to be perfect.

Bucket, mop, microwave, vacuum, printer. I just feel like it‘s funny and like they’re just part of the household. … lamp …. toilet .…. The day I have a cat named mop is the day I’ve reached self-actualization
