In my final year of high school, I signed up for the senior musical on a whim. Like a bunch of other queers, I enjoyed musical theatre. I wasn't a "theatre kid", but I had listened to a couple soundtracks here and there. I thought I'd at least have fun, and I knew I was friends with some people doing it.
Little did I know the Filipino singing gene never loses, and neither does the Filipino acting gene. Somehow I managed to get a lead role (I was Donkey in Shrek the Musical) with loads of lines and a few solo songs. It was the greatest experience I ever had in high school and it happened in my last year. I met new people, discovered new talents and passions, and built some of my strongest friendships ever thanks to the time I spent in the musical.
If I never decided to do the show because I thought it would be fun, I don't think I'd be nearly as happy with myself as I am now.
