You will surprise yourself and you will connect with the coolest groups of people. Donā€™t let imposter syndrome or rejection stop you. Get rejected one hundred times. Itā€™s worth it for the times youā€™ll be seen and accepted and supported. And you get to support others while youā€™re at it.

dreamydoodledoo check out Dreamworldgirl zine !! They have a website and an instagram (I think tumblr too!). They post submission opportunities for their zine as well as others pretty frequently!! I was able to get involved with them and found opportunities through them as well :)

Yes! It's so worth it. I attribute my entire social circles to diving into things I didn't feel like I was worthy of or had the right background/education for

theclack this is so reassuring to hear !!! I feel like its so hard for people to find things to do where you can really connect with others. Iā€™ve been trying to get out of my comfort zone but I already have way more opportunities to meet people than I did last year :) thatā€™s all from doing more art related endeavors

valoorie It's scary to start from zero, but you'll find your way. I spent so much of my college/post-college years trying to find those like-minded people. I didn't go to school for anything art related, but it was all I wanted to spend my time doing, and I had severe imposter syndrome before I even knew the term for it.

...is what I tell myself. I have seen peoples' careers take off in mere months because they're taking on any and every kind of work. To me, that seems like Just Another Jobā„¢ļø territory, and I'm not willing to accept that kind of creative death. I just do the kind of creative work I want, so I'm ok with it taking a long time to find my audience (there always is one, and you will find it!) I think the thing that held me back the longest was my own social anxiety and insular tendencies - nobody can learn about what you're doing if it's in a vacuum! I really don't like the term networking, but just keep doing the things you love and pick up on like-minded people along the way. Edit: Oh, and applying to open calls for group zines or art shows is a great way to find more of those people!

Write every day. So no to other things in order to write. Share what you write on here and everywhere else. Publish on a blog or a Substack, share links to your work. Don't heed the feedback all that muchā€”good or bad. You know what's in you. Work the muscle of putting it in front of people. Go to a public library and volunteer to start a writing workshop for an underserved group, like people facing homelessness. Write with them when they write.

If thereā€™s one thing Iā€™ve learned from therapy it is to practice delay If you feel the anxiety bubble up thatā€™s prompting you to react, wait 10-15 minutes. If you feel the need to say something or make a decision, hit pause and wait it out. Sometimes I forget to delay but every time I remember to, Iā€™m always glad I did.
