Really good movie! I didnā€™t like the very end, but thatā€™s okay. I saw it was nominated for best casting and absolutely deserved it. If you liked Mikey Madison, be sure to check out the TV series Better Things Finally, tiny but I think helpful spoiler, Anora does not get sexually assaulted in the movie. I say that because I wouldā€™ve enjoyed it more if Iā€™d known that going in.

lol jk - I did laugh a lot during that movie though. off the top of my head I think Anora is my fav movie of 2024 not cause itā€™s fresh in my mind but damn that ending wrecked me, it stayed with me. Anora was everything to me - full of depth, humor, style (the best execution of hair tinsel I ever did see), palpable sense of place, poignant & a great soundtrack. Iā€™ve loved Mikey Madison since Better Things on FX so its amazing seeing her get her flowers

This is the movie that put me onto Sean Baker and itā€™s a one of a kind film. Baker has a reputation of creating films that centers societal outcasts and this movie centers on the dispossessed population of frequent hotel renters/people who are at risk of homelessness in Florida. At first, you think the movie will be about Moonee and her relationship with Jancey as they explore the world of Kissimmee unattended with their antics but it becomes very clear that Mooneeā€™s mother (Halley) is the driving force for this particular movie. She is such a resilient and caring mother and the audience knows she has so much stacked against her that we want to see her win, despite her glaring parenting faults. Buyers beware, but a lot of people put too much weight in its controversial ending, and I think thereā€™s so much more to say about Bobby, the hotel manager (acred by Willem Dafoe). I am not the most literate cinephile in the world, and to be real I did not ā€œknow Dafoeā€™s gameā€, but the moral crisis he had to endure was so real, that I think that people who work in social ā€œhelpingā€ professions should seriously examine the boundary between helping and enabling, especially when social systems fail and people are left helpless and desperate. After this movie, I watched more than a few more of Bakerā€™s filmsā€” Tangerine, Red Rocket, and Iā€™ve been sleeping on Anora but thatā€™s on my list before the end of the year (in like two days). Seriously, I canā€™t celebrate this movie enough.

Been waiting for this one to drop for forever! Thought it wouldnā€™t meet my expectations like the last few movies i really wanted to like but this definitely surpassed it. My favorite part is that the main character *spoiler alert* got a happy ending! *spoiler alert end* Charming movie about a struggling artist trying to not get deported while putting up with stereotypical, rich, white artists in order to achieve their dream. Has small moments of absurdity but nothing too crazy plus the performances are all cool. short and sweet and funny!
