This is a whole book by the author John McCarthy. If you have grown up poor in the Midwest, you will know what he is talking about. 10/10

A “memoir of a place”, Crapalachia is the semi-unreliable account/ recollection of growing up and coming of age in rural West Virginia. Throughout reading (well, listening to) this, I found myself jumping between sadness and laugh out loud laughter. The characters often feel exaggerated to the point that I feel there’s no chance it’s an accurate recollection, but then there are moments where they’re brought back down to earth instantly grounding them and making sense of some of their eccentricities. To give you a small taste of what’s in store for you if you choose to read this - the antics McClanahan recounts range from helping his uncle pour beer down his feeding tube before listening to his favorite radio preacher, to visiting his Grandma’s pre purchased grave because it’s a “good investment”.

I recently got my first mechanical watch, a Hamilton re-issue of a 1970’s British Air Force style (look into vintage W10 watches - really interesting/cool think of this as a rec within a rec), and I immediately wanted to dive into classic war books. I was laying in bed trying to find something that was available on audible (so much less time to read post-baby) and I landed on this classic. This is one of those high school curriculum books that a lot of people have “read” but most of them haven’t really read it. This book is an anti-war book without being an in-your-face anti-war book. Written by a German soldier from WWI, about German soldiers in WWI, it’s real and HARSH. The contrast of what these young teens expected when enlisting (heroism, glory!) to what they really experience (disease, death, trench foot) is shocking and ultimately very sad. All Quiet on the Western Front is a heavy read but so worth it, it’s a classic for a reason.

Maybe this isn’t so much a fix for staff, but I feel like the reposting of things has gotten a bit lame. I don’t want the “Everyone” feed to be the same post 20 times with nothing added, especially when the thing being re-rec’d isn’t even a real reccomendation in the first place. I like this app because it is different than Instagram and Twitter and tumblr and the like. I feel like people are trying to interact similarly to those other apps here. I feel like we are all drifting back into creating the same social media AGAIN. My vote would be to remove the feature entirely, but I see how it can be used thoughtfully
