arranging bits of food in my bento box the night before work is such a meditative activity. from the moment i put the box in my bag, bike to the office, place it in the fridge, and finally eat it—it’s all i can think about. the feeling of pride and accomplishment just sets me up for a great day (and makes me feel super smug too). i think it might be because growing up in estonia, we never had to do this. it was considered odd if you did. school meals were free and all offices had a cafeteria where lunch attendance was pretty much mandatory with the repercussions of social suicide. 10 years ago i moved to the netherlands where lunch is just a bag of sliced bread and a packet of gouda or salami you get from the closest grocery store. and that’s every. single. day. wat de boer niet kent, dat vreet hij niet—what the farmer doesn't know, he doesn't eat. i’m not dutch, nor a farmer, and i like to be in the know about food so this way of thinking just ain’t my jam (hehe wink wink). don‘t get me wrong, i was and still am so appreciative of our school lunches and simultaneously think of everyone who had no other choice but to plan and pack their meals on the daily. if you did, i’m super curious to know how you feel about it now. do you still do it? does it bring you as much joy as it does for me?? do you even think about it? lmk :))))

Being in the US and going to private school most of my life, cafeteria food actually wasn’t very stable. I packed my lunch like 80% of the time. Also I was at a phase where I wanted to be ”healthy” (but like 2000s/2010s healthy, which could be considered disordered eating now). Then work cafeterias can be iffy depending on where you work. But i do enjoy the concept of packing a lunch and preparing things for yourself. I used to be quite embarrassed about certain things i would bring to eat, but now I don’t care. Additionally, at my first job my coworker only ate like plain or vanilla greek yogurt for lunch EVERY DAY. i don’t want to become that 😂

I’m fortunate as my parents always packed my school lunches, considering in the UK canteen food isn’t great. I still do now because it’s a good lesson in frugality, as instead of paying £5 a day for lunch when out, I can spend about £15 to last me a week with packed lunches that are to my exact tastes!

sniffle yes to saving money! i originally started packing lunches more regularly to reduce food waste and quickly noticed how much i was cutting costs simultaneously. it’s a win-win!!

I love lunch. I used to hate it. These days, my work schedule kicks off at 2pm. So instead of prepping lunch in advance I get to take a field trip to my kitchen around 1. I slice up an apple with a little almond butter, I dog a couple kiwis, I make a nice lil salad or soup weather permitting. It is a beautiful thing to spend time in the kitchen midday. Food tastes differently at different times of day

i love thinking about food and it’s so fascinating how lunch is absolutely essential, even exciting, to some and popcorn for others. plus you might get a good restaurant rec out of it. alternative: what are you going to have for lunch today? my coworkers and i can spend upwards of an hour discussing this

even though it takes effort and planning, i’m trying to see it as an act of love for my future self, like packing a kid’s lunch. my roommate even brings juice boxes to work so i started doing that too. it’s a simple task that makes my busy schedule so much easier and gives me something to look forward to each work day
