it helps me to spend my cozy bed-time not thinking too hard about the world. instead i can play… …a memory game like naming every winner of drag race in chronological order (unless I fall asleep first) …an alphabet game where i think of a sea creature for each letter (unless i fall asleep first) …an acrostic poem game where I use the letters in a movie title to describe the plot of the movie (this one actually kept me awake from being fun and challenging oops)

genuinely don't know if this is odd or not, but this has been something i've done for the longest time. i have a hard time falling asleep and sometimes white noise just makes the brain static a lot worse. but! i also don't want to turn on my ipad and watch a movie because it's the end of the day and my eyeballs hurt. my solution is to turn on a familiar movie, one i love or that brings me comfort and play that as an mp3 and just listen to it. my go to is usually you've got mail as i watched it a lot with my parents and even fell asleep to it, so it weirdly brings me a sense of ease. it also reminds of falling asleep on the couch while watching hbo late at night and my parents coming down to get me to go up to sleep in my own bed, or when me and my sister had a tv in our shared room, and my parents would creep in to turn it off because we both fell asleep watching late night disney shows.

there is something extremely comforting knowing someone is wide awake doing something (like playing video games, doing chores) while you are on the verge of clocking out and falling into a deep slumber

reading gets me sleepy every night. the best books to read in bed are those more focused on rich prose instead of story and dialogue. just getting lost in letters, turns of phrase, looking up silly words like "saturnine" and their etymologies quiets my mind and makes me fall asleep in minutes

My whole life has been spent in and around theaters. They are my church. These days it seems like we take performers a bit for granted. But for every stream online there is a person who had the guts to get up onstage and perform in some theater somewhere. My two favorite places in Los Angeles for live performances are Largo at the Coronet and The Elysian Theater. Go to either place any night and you will very likely find something wonderful and surprising. Don’t you want that?
