i just cut open an orange, i smell it. i am about to make some tea, i smell both the cup and the tea bag. i am cooking, i smell all the ingredients and spices and make sure they work together. putting on a t-shirt, i smell it. about to pour some water into my water bottle, smell it (that can be disgusting). i don't know if this is a habit or a tick but i do it unconsciously.

i love it when my senses SENSE THE THINGS and I FEEL THOSES SENCES SENCING!!!! idk i feel like if we humans could manipulate smell the same way we manipulate image or audio we would've made some crazy and beautiful art pieces lol

I think our sense of smell is one of the most beautiful things about our bodies. You can find me standing in a pine forest, huffing cardamom, taking pics of soaps in restaurant WCs, getting a headache in the fragrance section of the bespoke homegoods store. Some art incorporates smell, such as paint that effuses the scent of shoveled soil or an orchestra accompanied by scent cannons firing plumes across the audience, but I cherish this intangible gift of ours because it’s one that mass media can’t reach. It’s amazing that it’s connected so closely to our memory -- that you can smell a cologne or the inside of a tent and instantly hallucinate a school dance or a family camping trip you forgot about or, at the very least, didn’t mean to think about so vividly today. I know this will sound privileged and silly, but as a relatively young person my biggest fear from the pandemic wasn’t death — it was losing my sense of smell. I just know that it’s something I would miss so much. It enhances taste and experience and I would go crazy without it. here is a very incomplete list of things I think smell good: -tomato vines -Shoyeido friend of pine incense -garlic, raw and cooked -anise -palo santo -coffee, raw and cooked -armpits (lemme get in there) -briney ocean -tennis balls -old lifejackets -bergamot / patchouli stuff from L:A Bruket

i think about this so much, to tell you the truth. saw a woodpecker and my first thought was does he smell like sweat? dirt? seeds? bugs? what if i just got in there and took a fat huff of him? he needs a shower probably what do you think? disclaimer: i am dead serious i think about this all the time

i always always carry a pack of cards in my bag. my cards have been to all the countries i’ve been to and have been soaking wet, in snow, in sand... they will fall apart soon. i probably end up using them 50% of the time but at this point they are a safe item that i know i can whip out if you need to spice it up with your friends. i love learning new card games and my goal for 2025 is to ask more strangers to join in and play a few rounds with me and my friends.

this authumn my go-to grounding activity has become visiting my favourite cafe and listening to all the gossip and action happening around me. yesterday as i was drinking my tea and trying to read a bell hooks book, four british girls were loudly discussing how they wipe their bums. of course i couldn't read and had to listen and reflect on my own techniques. then on my right was a first date (?) where a french man was desperately trying to teach a girl this new card game. they were struggling. oh and last week i witnessed another very cringey first date where the guy was trying to guess his date's age for about ten minutes. i can't recommend ethical and harmless eavesdropping enough. makes me feel ALIVE!
