Nicknames

Give people nicknames. Give everyone a nickname. It doesn’t even need to make a ton of sense, but I think it’s a sign of effraction for someone to have something special you call them. Make it their contact name too.

Madeleine ➡️ Matt

I’m a Big Fat Queer (gender and sexuality) so my name always felt good, but not enough? I feel like Matt encapsulates the part of me that felt missing with Madeleine. But I also have a whole list in my phone of other names I think I’d enjoy, and I like going by Pikoliu online. I like seeing what different parts of myself come out with different names! Other possible names: Markets, Garden, Mint, Maybe, Ksenia, Pirkko, Yarrow, Meadow

Jake

Is not my real name. My dad always loved the name Jake though. When he and his sister were kids he inexplicably called her Jake (grandma hated this). When he eventually got the chance to name a boy (I was preceded by a bunch of sisters), he wanted it to be Jake. But I was named something else, which my mom says was because my dad’s mom wanted me to have a Catholic name, and my dad says it was to name me after an uncle (on mom’s side) who had just passed away. Either way, they have always called me Jake. And so I am sort of named after my uncle, sort of after my aunt. I feel good about it. If I was a woman I’d want my name to be Nora.
