okay so i finally went to the main branch of my local library after wanting to get a card for way too long but always putting it off. and the most wonderful, kind person at the help desk took her time to get me a card, tell me all the different tools and programs the library offers, go over the return/fine policy, and explain how to volunteer at the library. she was so incredibly nice and helpful, and it makes me appreciate my local community so much. and! i checked out two books i’ve been wanting to read forever. everyone go befriend your local librarians and library workers! they rock

Truly underrated. I worked at a library for a couple years after college and it was maybe the best working experience I’ve ever had. Community, baby! There’s so much on offer besides books too. Movies, music, video games, audiobooks, local history, free internet, printers, smells (good and bad). A library card is like a black Amex for people with personalities.

although i'm sure it varies from library to library, there are seriously so many resources! not only books at that library but you can request books to be shipped from other public libraries, and movies, games, music, study/meeting rooms, and mine has a whole computer lab in the basement, which is so sick and it's so easy to get a library card, my library has an app and if i wanted to i could go and check out a book and not talk to anyone BUT one of my favorite things is chit-chatting with the librarians and kind of building community ya know? and my library has a micro pantry where you can find non-perishable food items and toiletries. can't believe i haven't mentioned this yet but this is all FREE so yea and i'm located in the suburbs of chicago if youre curious and if for whatever reason something differs from state to state/library to library
