the classics / circa ~90s: bikini kill, hole, bratmobile, 7 year bitch, le tigre, veruca salt, babes in toyland, L7, jack off jill, tribe8 more recent/newer bands: the shiverettes, mommy long legs (LOVE them), team dresch, pom pom squad, destroy boys, THICK, slutever, tacocat, butch baby, dazey and the scouts, sorry mom?, the oozes, childbirth, queen chimera (most of these are explicitly riot grrrl - a few are def queer punk, DIY etc but idk if theyā€™d all specifically describe themselves as riot grrrl but have an adjacent sound and vibe for sure)

Predictable rec from me but also a very special rec as it's my 100TH REC! Riot Grrrl was a feminist punk movement in the Pacific North West in the 90s. I became of a devotee of the movement after reading Carrie Brownstein's memoir Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl. So many legendary punk bands came out of this time like Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, and Excuse 17. The genre is so important because it created space for women to make music about emotions typically only deemed socially acceptable for men to embody (e.g. RAGE). I implore you to listen to my personal favorite riot grrrl song: Watchmaker by Excuse 17. Soooooooo good and angry. Basically about mansplaining. More than just the music, it was an entire subculture with zines, art, and activism. The artwork created for the zines is so sick. I hope to one day make something as cool. Link on the post takes you to a catalogue of all the zines. :) The whole vibe of the movement obviously really speaks to me and I wish I could've been there and been a part of it. Hope to one day visit the PNW and feel a little closer to it.

being traditionally cool is really quite boring and iterative, and itā€™s actually very cool and sexy to geek out about something you like or share bits of knowledge on a topic youā€™re passionate about

i had it for a little over a year until i was like wow this is actually terrible! i genuinely think it has negatively impacted society by ruining peopleā€™s attention spans, having a horrific algorithm, and most of all by the most mind-numbing or outright harmful trends - fake words that people now use IRL (ā€œunaliveā€), trad wife tiktok, shein hauls, body-focused fitness vids that encourage fatphobia and unhealthy habits, shallow political/feminist theory and queer discourse, ā€œalpha maleā€ podcaster tiktok, encouraging overconsumption in general, trends ruining local spots or niche thingsā€¦ the list goes on
