It’s cool to learn new things, it’s cool to develop some new skills. It’s cool to be able to access a whole bunch of data and knowledge at your fingertips. Don’t let some guy on a podcast become your father figure or give you financial advice or try to anoint you with another monolithic identity not too dissimilar from the one you vowed to leave behind. Life doesn’t get any better, but YOU do.

So important! Liars are thriving online. Grifters and cult leaders in every corner. Some grifters even own the social media apps we use 😅 Suckerberg and Musky drank the kool aid

dreamydoodledoo Was gonna do a follow-up rec sort of akin to this same point, but a little more broad. Cause I’ve seen the impact of what that shit can do. I’ve seen people get radicalized by the right wing twtter/rumble shit to the point where they’re texting gcs about the nuclear power surge that’s gonna happen on Super Bowl Sunday. Basically caused a lot of internal division with friends and family and many people felt isolated. I’ve been there and that shit’s never fun. But on the same token, and it hits a nerve because I know a lot of people get quiet when I bring it up, I’ve seen people grow deep into Marxist theology (which is understandable), but then get caught up so deep down the rabbit hole that they cut off friends/family that really loved and cared about them on bullshit technicalities and then ended up alone with nothing but a creed, it’s always a bummer. I’ve been guilty of this myself. For almost a year, I held a long deep-seated resentment/grudge against white people due to a horrid personal event in my life. I became extremely bitter and confrontational (most of the time without any merit). It became so unhealthy that my dad actually had to step in and cool me down, deradicalize me from all that shit, had to be reassured that there are good people from all walks of life who will treat you with kindness and dignity, and that the people I hated don’t make up the entire picture. They’re just a little smudge on this big gigantic canvas. Life’s too short to go around just being mad at everything all the time, and I believe that all the terminally online stuff genuinely instills some sort of mental illness. It’s like Prince said, ”the battlefield is the mind, and the prize is the soul. So, be careful. Be very careful.”

Greenelysium amen to all of that! My friends mom got totally radicalized by qanon and I actually found myself in one of the many online spiritual cults. 😵‍💫

dreamydoodledoo Qanon’s so funny to me cause they’re always like, “YO ITS GOIN DOWN ITS HAPPENING FOR REAL THIS TIME IM NOT PLAYIN” and then nothing ever happens. It’s the same shit as the doomsday clock people, just different end of the wave. I guess that’s the horseshoe theory they’re always talkin abou.

hiimhunt Wikipedia, but especially Internet Archive’s great to scroll through and discover so many new things. I can’t lie, I’m an Instagram reels addict though, some of those fights fun as hell to watch. I belong in 2005, I’m just stuck here unfortunately.

remember that most people here, and on the rest of the internet, know just as little as you. my time on instagram has shown me that likes and followers do not dictate good taste. my time on reddit has shown me that upvotes do not dictate good taste. internet recommendations might be a good starting point, but they are kind of a crutch. Don't rely too much on recommendations, don't treat them as gospel, don't use them to replace your own taste. develop good taste for yourself. it makes life tastier.

Realized I was taking the nonspecific, unpersonalized, marketable advice on reels to heart during a hard time. Get off reels ! Talk to your mom, your friend, your therapist, not content creators.

Don’t follow it! Nothing to make you feel self assured like being advised to do something you know is pointless or wrong

I don’t understand how yall end up at these random ass places you do, come across the books on ancient polyrhythmic science or whatever you read, listen to those indescribably niche tracks I’ve never heard of before or since, or host art installations from your makeshift garage, but I love hearing about every little bit of it, beyond fascinating to know all your stories and passions and the things that occupy ya mind and keep you alive. It’s like a big canvas comprised of different jagged pieces that all add up to a whole. I’ve only been on the app for two weeks or so and it’s already partly helped me heal from a lotta past grief and pain so I’m grateful to interact with yall.
