can't believe no one's said this yet so i'll say it. it can be a show you put on in the background but the way it develops into something very personal about growing up and the things that make you develop your worldview is very special to me. if i ever wanna cry i think about princess bubblegum's last line. the follow up specials/series (distant lands and fionna and cake) are also god-tier in their own right

the missing piece by shel silverstein

what a wonderful book! i re read this despite it being a childrens book and it was so fun. i feel like it gets outshined by The Giving Tree quite alot but i remember adoring The Missing Piece as a child and i think it teaches such a great lesson. so sweet.

Slouching towards bethlehem by joan didion

I have been reading this book and have nearly finished, and despite my dislike of previous Joan Didion works, I have thoroughly enjoyed this one and it taught me many things I felt other Didion books I read did not effectively convey. (I also enjoyed the talk of Joan Baez near the start, it very much suprised me.) “We forget all too soon the things we thought we could never forget. We forget the loves and the betrayals alike, forget what we whispered and what we screamed, forget who we were. My stake is always, of course, in the unmentioned girl in the plaid silk dress. Remember what it was to be me: that is always the point.” thanks joan 😛
