I have always read in bed before lights out, until having a phone ruined all that. Ever since my phone became my alarm clock (several years ago), things have gone steadily downhill. But! Iā€™m trying, and the last few months have reminded me why I love finishing my waking hours tucked in with a book. Recent highlights: The Yellow House, The Vanishing Half, Crying in H Mart, Animal, Three Women, and My Year of Rest and Relaxation.

all you need is like 1-2 pages of text on paper, sometimes less. works every time. i used to swear by fiction but lately iā€™ve been reading a lot of ā€œhard booksā€ for example Concerning the spiritual in art by wassily kandinsky and Memories dreams reflections by carl jung and i think these work even better for sleepiness in the way they make me feel too stupid to be awake. blue light from the phone/laptop etc will kill you

re read your favorite book from when you were a kid read true crime or celebrity biographies or romance novels as the other rec said, read short books! I did this for a year and it helped me so much to get back into the practice of reading go to the library and check out three or four booksā€” donā€™t buy them so you donā€™t feel guilty if you cant get through one go outside with a book when itā€™s sunny, itā€™s harder to see your phone screen in the sun, and reading outside is both a big flex and a great joy I have a personal rule about screens in bed outside of specific times which helps me read instead of scrolling if I want to lie down for a bit It does take a little bit of practice to get it reincorporated back into your routine but itā€™s easier if you love it !

In an effort to decentralize social media in my life, I started reading againā€¦ and I didnā€™t realize what a joy it could be! I couldnā€™t tell you the last time I read a book of my own accord, but I started with The Bell Jar, and now Iā€™m on Just Kids. They are perfect ways to ease myself into more patience, quietness, and satisfaction. :)

After approximately one thousand years of rolling my eyes at my parents for telling me to write hand-written notes ā€¦ I am currently super into writing hand-written notes. Short cute ones! No biggie! Write a postcardā€”people love the stuff! I am also a sucker for a good stamp from the USPS. I know, the nerd levels are peaking right now. But look at these espresso stamps!! Theyā€™re so freaking cute!!

After making rice literally every night for six months straight starting in (yep) March 2020, I finally invested in a beautiful rice donabe from Toiro. Donabes are Japanese clay pots that have been used to make soups, stews, rice, and other dishes for many hundreds of years. Theyā€™re heavy, simple, beautiful, and designed to hold heat and cook foods gently. I canā€™t say Iā€™m as good at cooking rice in my donabe as I am in the 2-quart saucepan I used to use, but cooking well is all about repetition. Iā€™m going to keep at it!

I watch a lot of random stuff on YouTubeā€”crunchy gori gori foot reflexology, makeup tutorials (preferably featuring drag queens), noisy chiropractic adjustmentsā€”oh and the occasional food video, too. Recently The YouTube algorithm goddesses decided I would like to watch a competition-elimination show about butchery, and they were right! This extremely niche show on the History channel is shockingly entertaining? If you like watching animals being disassembled, that is!
