I live in NY now but lived in LA for about 5 years in my early 20s. I was a party girl and my fav thing to do on weekends was to sneak into luxury hotel pools. Chateau Marmontā€™s pool is easy to slip into if you have the confidenceā€¦ walk in like you own the place!!! Iā€™ll always have a soft spot for the Chateau because itā€™s the main character in my favorite Sofia Coppola movie, Somewhere (2010). My dear friend Chris Chang knows how much I love the hotel and sent me their signature candle via snail mail one cold winter. Itā€™s such a warm scent and it brightens up my mood instantly. I only light it when Iā€™m feeling EXTRA homesick for Los Angeles because I want it to last forever (Iā€™ve actually burned through 3 of them at this point).

i am admittedly a bit crazy about scent in the home. every corner of the apartment has an opportunity for activation: incense and smudge sticks in the bedroom, reed diffuser in the bathroom, a mini candle in the kitchen for when the lack of ventilation makes the stench of burned food linger and choke up the air. sometimes there is ritual involved in these smells, but walking past the big coffee-scented candle in the living room and stopping in my tracks to light it became so second nature to me that i don't even think about it sometimes. the issue lies in this conundrum: i like the living room to smell nice, but i'm usually just lighting this on my way to the kitchen or my office and won't be on guard to protect all the wood furniture in our home from the flame. so today, i announced to my housemates and our guest: "i'm going to take a shower, and i'm lighting this candle, but now it's your responsibility. keep an eye on it for me." why? because a living room candle warms up the room with its glow. it's a warmth that just makes sense for this space, dim illumination, with everyone together in a row on a couch that could stand to be longer. and there is something to be said about the trust involved in lighting a candle. everyone in this room knows what i need in our home to make it function for me, and when i tell them to keep an eye on the big candle in the living room, i know they will, for me.

Iā€™d have gone completely insane this year if I didnā€™t ā€œpracticeā€ yoga. Iā€™ve been streaming videos from my fav studio VERAYOGA since April. They teach Vinyasa yoga, which is yoga as exerciseā€¦ because exercise gives you endorphins, endorphins make you happy, and happy people just DONā€™T kill their husbands. Very challenging but very worth it (hello, have you seen my abs???). Keeps me limber and grounded. They have good playlists, but sometimes I just put on Radiohead and pretend like Iā€™m Dakota Johnson in Suspiria. Moody girl checkkk.

I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever read sci-fi before in my life, but when they (the industry) announced that the new film adaptation of Dune would be starring my angel TimothĆ©e Chalamet, I was like okayā€¦ hmmā€¦ interestingā€¦ My friend kept bugging me to read it and finally I was like, you know what, fine. I bought a copy at McNally Jackson (ā€œgotta do it for Timmyā€ said the cashierā€¦ he knew). At first I was like, what language is this in??? But then I discovered the glossary and started getting the flow. Instantly hooked. The story is addictive and it felt good indulging in something totally new. Itā€™s so not meā€¦ but Iā€™m sick of me. I want an escape! I want to be on another planet! Arrakis!!!!
