Roy himself referred to this bizarre A side as a "mini opera"-- a really wild ride both sonically and emotionally. He wrote and recorded this with a huge philharmonic orchestra right after his wife and sons died in classically tragic ways (motorcycle accident, house fire). The fact that he was certainly having some sort of emotional breakdown is pretty evident on this cut, it's awesome.

OK this song manages to halt my tears and weeping, leaving me in a place of suspended awe, washed over by a clarity slowly coming into frame. something about the gift of being alive at the same time of those we love/cherish/appreciate and the devastation of things ending and the honor of it all. the story goes that garfunkel asked simon to write a song honoring the late architect. instead, simon wrote the lyrics under the guise of their foreboding breakup because he apparently didn't know who wright was...I don't fully buy that and lean more into the narrative that he saw this as perfect opportunity to make the most subliminal breakup track. anyway I can never tire of it and the flute solo is divine. the hand drums! I simply adore.

It's so hard, it's taken me almost 30 years to learn how to do it in the most rudimentary way. People in New York hate this. Learn to love the depth of the mirror!
