reading about the 2008 UMG fire which destroyed the masters of a thousand plus musicians, like a musical library of alexandria. what can be more human than mourning the loss of information? it’s a fear! isn’t that beautiful?

no matter the scale, it is healthy to allow yourself to feel the weight of death and succumb to mourning. people close to you, versions of yourself from the past, millions of innocent souls under oppressive forms of control. all to be honored with spilled tears

this is something i feel really strongly about to improve all of our lives and grieving processes. especially for Americans, it’s an enduring taboo that talking about death is too dark, too bummer, too disturbed. i think this renders all of us without a roadmap or community when, inevitably, someone dear to us dies. practicing talking about it, building a distress tolerance to it, learning about other people’s experiences with death, are all some of the things that have helped me the most since my brother’s death. it truly is the most universal great mystery and i think we’d all be better for it to walk through it together. ❤️

not really a rec nor an experience that has an end date but it is part of being alive and it does make you understand certain things about your own life.

An absolutely incredible online library of avant-garde film, music, poetry, and more — it's one of the few parts of the internet that is still a pure, universal good. You will almost exclusively find things that you cannot believe it exists or never thought to wonder if it exists, for example: this 1966 documentary about & featuring John Cage & Rahsaan Roland Kirk! They compare and contrast avant-garde classical and avant-garde jazz, and discuss* avant-garde music as a whole. It is beautifully and strangely filmed and is soundtracked with their beautiful and strange music. And this is just one of hundreds of incredible finds curated for free on UbuWeb. You don't need to sign up or enter your email address, you don't need to pay to remove ads -- all you need is curiosity. It's exactly what the internet was meant to be. *The "discussion" doesn't happen verbally, but is done by the elements of the film itself, and by John Cage's poetry, intercut with Roland Kirk's live music (P.S: If you don't know Rahsaan Roland Kirk, I only more highly recommend this doc — but you may recognize him if you saw a photo or video of him playing music in his distinct style of... playing 4 saxophones at once.) (P.P.S: I would love if you shared here what you find there!)
