I recently dove deeper into Numero Group’s reissue of tracks from Deep City Records, the Miami-based soul and R&B label founded by FAMU classmates Willie Clark and Johnny Pearsall in the early 60s. Really fun to trace the influences drawn from Motown, marching bands, and Afro-Caribbean music that created the “Miami sound” and launched the careers of great artists like Betty Wright, who recorded the linked song “Paralyzed” when she was 12 years old (!!!)

All the songs on Prime Choice are amazing but this one holds a special place in my heart. Just adorable. Not sure what to call this genre but it’s 80’s from Miami…Reminds me of Arthur Russell but also Sesame Street?
