The whole thing sound majestic to me, but the third movement?? This shit slaps and is different. ok it is perhaps gimmicky next to the more traditional adjacent parts, because it’s almost entirely chorale. But it can be someone’s hook into the piece. Sounds middle eastern but somehow not maquamic?? Then you realize it might be Jewish.. but not klezmeric, more cantorial. Which it turns out to be indeed — recorded at the synagogue of Great Ades (ha) in Jerusalem. so so beautiful..

The Stabat Mater dates back to the 13th century and details Mary’s pain at the Crucifiction. One of the absolute hardest Christian hymns, this arrangement was composed while Pergolesi was dying of tuberculosis in the 1730s. ‘Fac ut portem Christi mortem, passiónis fac consórtem, et plagas recólere.’ (Grant that I might bear the death of Christ, Make [me] kindred in the passion, and contemplate the wounds.) Just cannot recommend it enough ffo dark and disturbing hymns and the baroque. Still working through all the available recordings but favs currently are the 1985 LSO and the 2013 I Barocchisti. Will come back and update with definitive ranking xx

My fav podcast on warfare and conflict journalism. Also a healthy sprinkle of fringe satanic cults / teяяorism reporting. If you identify either as a co-intel hoe or as Fyodor Dostoyevsky you’ll def enjoy the level of detail. Also, for only $30 a month I get to hear Jake Hanrahan say my name at the end of each episode. A terrific deal
