I like really abstract board games like chess or go. The rules are usually simple and the fun is in repetition and unlocking patterns in strategy. Quoridor checks all the boxes for me

My current addiction. It’s kind of like a slot machine but you can get better at winning. There’s something about how distilled this game is. No narrative or world building, just the pure game mechanic and the tight rougelite gameplay loop. Kinda mathy because you need to do some multiplication in your head to figure out if your hand is gonna create a big enough score, but I’m very sucked in trying to make the ultimate broken combination of cards/jokers. Scores potentially can get so big they need to be represented with scientific notation. I haven’t played too many other card builder games, though I did love Inscryption.

Favorite non-board game board game. It’s like a continually changing puzzle game. The tiles make a very stimulating clinking sound and the creepy little face on the wild cards is very cute to me. They have an app that’s pretty good too.

or any board game turned app, really. its a good way to kill larger amounts of time and with long rounds there’s not any instant gratification. strategy games work your brain, too! i try to play a game of catan/ticket to ride/monopoly in the mornings instead of getting on reels or even PI right away. it makes me slow down and it puts my brain into gear, + i feel productive instead of gross and sluggish like i would post-reels.

Poet & songwriter best known as the frontman of “Silver Jews,“ and the lesser known “Purple Mountains,“ Berman has a way of exploring the beauty in the darker aspects of life. Berman tragically took his in 2019. He had such a special way with words both as a poet and a songwriter. My favorite song of his, “Famous Eyes” is linked above.
