watch the new (and likely final) woody allen film in leaked form with GenAI-sourced subtitles. far from the glory of his prime, seeing woody try and translate his comedic rhythms to a language he does not speak is fascinating, even moreso when translated through AI. a more honest and thought provoking experiment in language than Days and a comedic sibling to Godard’s Goodbye to Language.

Godard by way of the aftermath of the end of history, Godard by way of digital haze, Varda by way of Xavier: Renegade Angel, where one day distorts through time and space and almost becomes nightmarish. the vulgarity of gig work. never have I seen something so interested in and so bitter about digital interfaces and digital production, film history, post-communism, and the internet! which weighs heavily throughout the film, simply by the way it looks! the smartest and most reflective thing I’ve seen all year, a must watch if you have MUBI!

not sure if it can well and truly be called a french new wave film for a lot of reasons (not quite french, not released in precisely the right time period, etc.) but i think a good entry point to the kind of surrealist, vibes-oriented as opposed to narrative-oriented filmmaking that "foreign films" (especially European) tend to evoke / get clowned for in American media it's funny, it's bizarre, it has something to say but you might need a couple watches to get it (at least i did)

every beautiful work of film is at the same time an expression of the artist's political critiques and their own freaky fantasies and this one's no exception, truly beautiful stuff
