i reserve Monday nights for egregious scrolling while simultaneously watching something on the ‘big‘ screen (tonight it’s a youtube video about disgraced YouTube groomer Onision) while also eating something delicious + lying horizontal with flippers/legs akimbo like a pregnant sea lion. If you can’t escape the productivity mindset and are always harping about ’wasting your life’ while also complaining about extreme tiredness then allot a specific time to run your phone battery down and your social battery up. YMMV if you have kids or dependents. If you have a cat they will love this new you.

Did this last year, need to start again. The most relaxing and resetting thing you can do for yourself, also helps you build more productive and fun daily routines when you can’t fill the time scrolling or listening to something mindless. cant recommend enough!

No screen Sundays. If I want to listen to music its CDs or radio. If I want to watch a movie, no I don’t. If I want to see a friend, I will make plans with them on Friday or Saturday to meet up. As a result, I read more, write more, and sit with questions like “did Citizen Kane‘s 50 year winning streak in the Sight and Sound critics choice survey end in 2012 or 2022? When did Stephen Merritt come out? Whats the etymology of Whitsun?“ This is something that I have practiced off and on for many years but I’ve been doing it every week since December and I love the way that it just allows me one day of true freedom and rest.

this is actually a weekly ritual for me that I've been doing for like a year now. every weekend I block out at least 1 hour to just sit and 'waste time'. no screens, no music (these two are super important), just be outside and paying attention to the sounds and sights and smells. plus letting my mind wander. sometimes my wasting time is just a walk and taking film photos. or people watching. but the essence is you carve out a block of time to simply exist without any pressure to create or produce or do anything and to just do what you want. super grounding. another thing I make time for is at least a one hour block to make something with my hands. can be press on nails, jewellery, clay, whatever. my brain struggles to be still and this is the only way I get the stream of thoughts to chill. also there is something so fulfilling about making something with your hands and seeing the product of your handiwork and toil (insert Dostoyevsky quote here).

Doing something new with your body but not towards a goal such as becoming a ballerina. Learning a rigorous craft in a bodily way. Generally cheaper than barre classes and the real thing!
