I rented this movie when I was 14 from a rental place near my house (shout out videotheque) and I have no idea why this one. i picked it on my own and it was my first experience with indie cinema and i think about it once a week. its written by Charles Mudede who did a crime column for the stranger in Seattle and all of the crime scenes in the movie are based on real reports. Major fever dream vibes. the director also did a wild documentary about Mr. Hands if you’re into that sort of thing.

i’m spending the week in nyc this week so obviously as i’m walking the streets i‘m reminded of all my fav flicks set in this city... special effects was written/directed by larry cohen - one of the coolest and weirdest b-movie writer/directors. i love all of his 70s-80s movies. they have the craziest scripts, he casts weird background characters, and always delivers a vibe. he’s usually working on a small budget so there’s a rawness and realness within his bizzaro worlds. it stars a young eric bogosian (talk radio, uncut gems) playing an unhinged delusional director in the midst of making a very meta movie about a murder he committed. his loft in the movie is one of my fav sets ever. indoor stain glass windows, all red bedroom. i’m sure someone on here can tell me it’s precise location. it also stars zoe lund (ms. 45, bad lieutenant) - her accents, look, and range is unreal. i don’t wanna say too much and spoil the plot really, but if you dig movies about movies, brian de palma or abel ferrera stuff, then you should check this out…

i watched this last month which i RENTED and now it is in this month's criterion curated collection. this always happens to me because i can feel the zeitgeist in my blood. anyway, great movie with AMAZING styling and home set (california architecture at its best!!) and performance from robin w. i learned that originally trent reznor was supposed to do the score -the studios werent ready for that but it would have made the movie even better. two thumbs up 👍👍

Old Hollywood experience but not as fancy as Musso and Franks (the prime rib is half the price and almost as good) but better than Tam O Shanter (which has gone downhill imo). Great people watching, horrible but fun live band on weekends, best garlic bread ever (they toast it with kraft Mac and cheese powder on top). When you’re in the booths you can feel the ghost of lunches past where a bunch of studio execs got sauced and came up with some bob hope movie.
