Every one of his books surprises me—they’re never what you think they’re going to be and describing them is an experience that often takes more words than you thought it would. This one is funny and suspenseful and extremely sad. I would love to write like he does.

John Swartzwelder is the funniest writer in the world. I don’t know that I could write about him and do him justice, but he was a longtime Simpsons writer and then started self-publishing books that are so incredibly joke dense it will blow your mind. Here’s a quote from The Time Machine Did It, one of his many books following a strange detective named Frank Burly: “When I first became a detective I had tried solving crimes the way mystery writers do: coming up with the solution to the crime first, then working back to the point where you don't know what the hell is going on. But for some reason every time I tried that I ended up locked in a closet.”

Matthew Goldin is “to put it simply… for better or worse, a compelling North American entertainer and prose stylist.” His new book “Matthew” is hilarious and a bit of an anomaly. Matthew’s twitter has been my favorite account for years (Which I’ve linked). His new book seems to be poking fun at the humorist memoir concept. It’s incredibly funny thus far. PI should have him on the editorial.

My parents bought me these chocolates from Costco and they’re insanely good. I go through them so quick. They are made from a recipe that the mom of the owners’ made while suffering from cancer. It’s kind of advertised as being like a fundraiser type product but I can’t seem to find any evidence that the proceeds go towards any charity. Maybe it’s my own assumptions but the vibe on the packaging is really that. They’re awesome though.

Amazing music venue in Winnipeg that lasted 10 beautiful, formative years. You could always show up and see a million people you know and love (kind of a Winnipeg thing in general but rate of success here was very high). Had one last amazing tbh bender (lol) there last night. Worried about what will be left “in this town” now that it’s gone but grateful for this place providing so many of the best memories of my youth (which is still ongoing btw).

Everything good in life happens when you stand up. A party isn’t a party until people run out of places to sit. Just try standing up—don’t restrict yourself to the sofa all night when you’re with your friends. It just feels better to stand up.
