Last summer while traveling I got a pocket radio so that instead of listening to my same Spotify playlists I could tap in to the pulse of wherever I was visiting. It was such an amazing experience of feeling connected to place and feeling very aware of the people around me. like I am part of this! We are all part of this!! I could rant forever about why I’m passionate about local radio…but we all know music is an incredible mechanism to connect/communicate with people- and where hits stations loose identity, algorithm driven streaming becomes such an island. Local radio fills an important niche of here. now. us. we. are experiencing this together

I was telling my roommates about how i like playing the radio at my work bc i feel like it puts people at ease and gives us things to talk about. It became a long conversation about the stations and the DJs we grew up with as kids and we could all remember exact soundbites. I was reminiscing about listening to local radio stations on trips with family/friends and how it grounded us in an exact place and time. Just a magical invention that feels underrated and sweetly archaic in streaming times 💘

there’s not much that’ll make you feel like a person existing with your own thoughts and feelings until you start tuning into community radio stations, where the biggest sponsor is the local animal shelter. they’re doing some of the most fun stuff over there, because radio is whatever they want it to be! and it’s such a fun way to get cool music recommendations. On college radio stations especially, there are often communist programs and book clubs, which we love. But check out your local radio’s website and see what’s up n coming. Just, great stuff all around. Something about scheduled programs or DJ sets that you look forward to listening heals the body I think. Slower gratification, something or another. And you don’t need to be in the car to tune in, there are tons of radio apps available to supplement your spotify time.

Recently, my car's aux finally broke for good, so while I wait to replace it, I've been listening to my local alternative radio station. The traffic report is super helpful and I love my DJs!! Like, these are people in my community that have been on the air for at least 10+ years and I love that I can trust them. Sometimes I'll tune in and it's really not my thing but then the next song is so near and dear to my heart. Maybe it's because my friend's mom would pick us up either blasting Kendrick's DAMN or 92 The ZEW, but it's such a nice nostalgic feeling for me. It's crazy to tune into the radio and hear the same voice introduce the same song that I heard ten years ago with my bestie. So try pausing your playlist and let the DJs guide you next time you buckle up.
