Sometimes I need somewhere to land with my notebook and pen, a place to consolidate my outstretched self.
My impulse has often led me to areas with verve, culture, and snappy people living impressively.
But lately I've been seeking out the mundane and forgettable spots instead. There's a local grocery with an ugly in-store coffee nook that I like. There, wedged between a display for gaudy coffee mugs, pharmacy bandages, and closeout items, all the beauty and magic is forced to come from within.
