I’m going through Mojo Nixon‘s discography right now and it’s fantastic - I had never heard of him before! It’s poignant and more powerful because they’re gone and their indelible mark has been permanently established in the annals of history. It’s also a powerful reminder we only get one kick at the can of life!

"Dying is another way. Or, like, killing your emotions, with drugs, alcohol or whatever. Those would be types of failure." Some sage life advice courtesy of Elliott Smith. This compilation of random video interviews and tour footage is a total discovery. There is one interval where I can see evidence of substances/the issues that dogged him later in life. But otherwise it's just the wryly funny, observant, articulate guy we all knew. "Dminor. The saddest of all keys." (laughs; BTW, Elliott never wrote a song in this key as best I can tell)

I am finishing up his (relatively) new biography -- it's tragic as expected but his entire body of work (esp "Pink Moon" which is the one everyone knows, but who cares) is extraordinary. It'll lead you down the road of discovering Davy Graham, John Renbourne, Bert Jansch, Karen Dalton, Judee Sill, Anne Briggs, etc.

These have been my big three for awhile — already said good-bye to the first two, have been bracing for Dylan for awhile now. How do we keep him alive? Maybe: introduce his music to others, play it loud and sign along, live out his greatest ideals of justice and goodness, learn the historical context for his music, make our own art, live fearlessly, love others with everything we can, feed the hungry, care for the poor, fight for the oppressed, visit the lonely, hold hands with the dying, shed tears with those who are grieving, love our enemies or something like that

Not sure if this counts more as a concert film but it’s so frigging iconic: BIG SUIT!

Im gonna be vulnerable and share a story where I am the offender. I matched with a very cool and smart and pretty girl who recently moved to Vancouver from Toronto (she’s now fairly big in the natural wine scene there HAHA but don’t want to doxx anyone just more a data point confirming the above). Aaaaaanyways I invited her to a very cool (long gone and now replaced with a shadow of its former self new pizza shop under new management) retro pizza shop and because I was so smitten proceeded to forget how to “sit cool”, how to make conversation, and EVEN how to eat pizza (omg this is so embarrassing). At the end of the date the server asked us if we wanted to pack up the rest of the pizza and I had picked up the check so she insisted I take it home but for some weird epigenetic mechanism around providing sustenance for the tribe reason I thought it would be “impressive” to say no to half of a massive pizza pie even though it was CLEARLY the end of the date making pizza box transport logistics a non-issue. A humbling reminder that we can all be the weird one sometimes đŸ«
