I revisited Towkio’s .WAV theory mixtape and realized that, unfortunately, Pitchfork really did mould who I am today.

I like to identify a time where I felt really in my element or really myself and do whatever feels appropriate for my current circumstances. recently I went thru my soundcloud playlists that I have touched since high school and sought out music that I had decided was cringe a while ago. I gave it all a listen and realized I still liked so much of the music. so I put it all in a playlist called ā€œhigh school me loved this songā€ or something. not that I was in my element in high school but I definitely felt freer in general in life at that point. then i’m like damn I have always had good music taste and I feel connected to versions of myself that exist concurrently but maybe are hidden away.

i was 15 when i discovered musical consciousness. Before i would just listen to the charts and not really feel the need to use music as a vessel of self expression. I was 15 when i got spotify. I remember the music being: George Ezra, The Beatles, The Blues Brothers, Avicii, and then a lot of generic pop. When i turned 16, i remember finding Green Day and The Rolling Stones for the first time. i think they were the only 2 bands i listened to for the entire year of 2016. Then i found a band called "The Frights" in late 2016, through Billie Joe's son's band "SWMRS". The frights have led me to where i am now I think it's really cool seeing how my music has changed through the years. I think music dictates a person more than their clothes and most other interests. My spotify liked songs is my journey from a boy to a man, and i think that's pretty neat

After falling in love with ā€œBitte Orcaā€ by Dirty Projectors around this time last year, I realized I love Pitchfork-era music. These old year-end lists introduce me to so many forgotten indie rock gems. I don’t think Gen Z remembers how tapped in Pitchfork used to be. This list in particular introduced me to ā€œDear Scienceā€ by TV on the Radio, an energetic and eclectic record that I knew nothing about.
