If you don’t have a car I would try to live within walking distance to the metro if possible. It’s been awhile but I liked living there. It is a pretty small city but walkable and a lot to do. Also a short drive to some beautiful nature in both beach and mountains. 2 airports and not too far from Baltimore, Philly, NYC. Can take the train to those cities too. A lot of bands play there and there are some pretty cool venues like Black Cat, 9:30 club,etc. World class museums if you are into that. Pretty diverse food scene. Cons (for me) would be the humidity, traffic, hard to park places, cost of living and real estate are expensive, people dress very business casual and are very career oriented, a lot of political talk everywhere.

philly, minneapolis, maybe baltimore

Each has varying degrees of transit mobility and work in different ways. All are on the cheaper end for major cities—though depends on your idea of cheap. I’ve lived in philly and minneapolis without a car. Philly’s trains and trolleys get you most places you’d want to go if you live near a stop. There’s also a bus system that’s a little frustrating bc of traffic but the routes are pretty comprehensive. Some bike lanes but the drivers there aren’t super safe to bike around. Minneapolis is more spread out and there are two light-rail lines (i think? maybe there are more? I’ve been here for like a month), and it seems like most people i know who aren’t driving take the buses. There’s also an incredible amount of bike lanes and trails. Downside is winter probably. And i haven’t lived in baltimore but i’ve heard good things! It’s also more affordable than most cities and i can’t attest to the quality of the public transit but i know it’s there.

Philadelphia

It’s central to anywhere in America you want to be, but there’s so much going on here you’ll always have new things to do. Just as long of a commute to Manhattan as Brooklyn or Queens, but half the price. Cheap food, weird drinking laws, cuter than you’d expect by a lot. Where my Philadelphia heads at?

Philly!!!

the humidity in the summer makes it (and the entire east cost tbh) iffy but its v gay, and decent access to greenery and healthcare! very community oriented as well so you'll find your people much easier than other big cities.
