some of these can be played on switch (if you have the online subscription) but all of them can be emulated pretty easily (especially if ur on mac):
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time –– first game in this series i played and it's silly and serious and makes you think deep about growing up
Super Mario 64 –– really accessible 3D platformer game that encourages experimentation and has very fun movement!
Metroid: Fusion –– a great entry point into an incredible series. the bosses are tough but the world is so immersive and creepy and the character you play as is a badass
WarioWare –– infinite games. so many wacky funny fun minigames
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney –– just a visual novel game and while the detective parts are a little boring the courtroom scenes are such a rollercoaster
Yoshi's Island –– ur yoshi and you help bring baby mario back to his parents

i cannot remember a first playthrough of any game i’ve ever played that was as enchanting as this. it was the wondrous adventure that the original zelda from 1986 was gesturing at but finally fully realized with the aid of modern technology and design. especially in the era it came out, when open-world games were at the absolute peak of bloodless checklists and cocomelon design, a game that was this single-mindedly committed to atmosphere, exploration, and wonder was such an unbelievable breath of fresh air (pardon the pun).
at the time it came out, i was falling out of love with gaming broadly, and botw is probably singlehandedly responsible for reigniting my love for videogames. it made me feel a kind of wonder that i genuinely did not think i was capable of feeling anymore, and it reminded me of the wholly unique kind of engagement that interactive art can provide that nothing else can. if you somehow haven‘t played it yet, i would literally recommend it to everyone. absolute fucking masterpiece.

Alice Madness Returns - first played it in my first year of uni at 18 and it became my whole personality, recently replayed it and it basically happened again.
The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood - a recent play and the game that has me considering becoming a game writer
Death’s Door - dark souls for cutie pies. i just find this endlessly repayable because the controls feel so nice for me. Also the first “hard game” I played that convinced me “hard games” aren’t out of my ability.
Final Fantasy X - the first “real game” I played on my ps2 when I was like 10. my friends used to make fun of me for not going out to play after school because I was doing anotber ffx replay.
Shout out to the spyro trilogy and Spiritfarer - the endlessly replayable basis for my favourite kind of gameplay, and the first game to make me cry, respectively.

i know i'm 22 years late but i've been playing the remastered version on switch and it's amazing. i think now that i'm an adult i understand how a game like this is supposed to work so i don't get lost literally all the time. when you're a kid, you're stupid.

little co-rec: if anyone's interested in more literature along these lines, SPARK by John Ratey is a book i read in a PE independent study in high school (bc i didn't want to take gym my last semester) that makes a very compelling argument for integrating physical exercise in your life as a solution to mental health issues. comes to similar conclusions in regard to SSRIs and really any medication in that they can't compare to the results that actually using your body can give you.
it really changed my perspective on exercise because i think physical exercise is wrapped up in 'self-improvement' when in reality it should be seen as self-care. and to bring it back to dancing: this is physical exercise that really connects you with the spirit in you and those around you, something that is undeniably a form of care
a study issued last month found that dancing is the most effective way of treating and mitigating depression. Walking, therapy, and yoga also outpaced SSRIs. and if you're saying 'oh this was probably funded by Big Dance', there's no evidence of that and if you're saying 'that's just what a Big Dance shill would say', well honey you're right
