le labo, ds & durga, and plenty of the other indie perfumers sell samples of their perfumes for like $3 a sample! luckyscent.com also has decants of like any scent you could want. buy a sample pack and try different scents out till you find one or two you really like. then think about what aspect of the scent you like, and buy other perfumes samples with similar notes. once you find one you really love, buy a bottle!
you may find that some scents work best during the night but feel overwhelming for work, or maybe they smell great in the summer but are a little too floral and fresh for winter… half the fun of perfumes :)

a low-cost low-commitment way to smell wonderful scents and discover new brands. i order them from brand websites or big online warehouses like luckyscents or twisted lily. i also keep samples in all my purses, my car, my makeup bag, my bf’s house, everywhere. they’re tiny and perfectly portable so you can always have them on hand in case of emergency. you’d also be surprised how long some of them can last, which is great if you don’t have like $200+ to drop on a full size fragrance. and if i don’t like one i just give it to a friend!

Bro you gotta go and buy like $200 worth of samples from LuckyScent and Ajavie and then meticulously determine which $450 perfume will become your signature scent. Sadly, I have one for every occasion (including dinner with friends - summer and dinner with acquaintances - summer) but perhaps you can be better than me and just pick one.

Getting to try some sample size fragrances for a decent price before you delve into the full size bottle is really where it’s at. Many fragrance websites offer this option, but if you don’t see it on the site, you could try emailing and inquire about samples and whether you can buy any.
Sampling some unique and complex fragrances that end up lasting a while, you really get to switch it up.

reading aloud to a friend or husband or partner is truly one of life’s little joys. swapping chapters back and forth is the perfect activity for a day in the park, a rainy afternoon on the couch, before dinner after a long hike on a camping trip, or in bed. i particularly recommend doing this with something silly, like a 1970s pulp fantasy novel or 1950s teen romance from the discount bin of a used book store.

how exactly do you live on two different coasts? that sounds unreal expensive. two rents? two electric bills? flights back and forth all year? how much money do you make? jk—how much did you inherit? listen, i’m also embarrassed to be a media type in brooklyn, but the fact that i spend christmas and easter visiting my childhood home does not mean i “live” in louisiana. be for real!
