Itā€™s an Aussie movie set in Tasmania during initial colonisation. Itā€™s brutal, less so on really heavy gore (though itā€™s definitely in there with the historical brutality and Aboriginal genocide) and all that fun stuff, but like, psychologically. Probably my favourite horror/thriller in recent years and my favourite Aussie one - but itā€™s a hard rewatch for me. No spoilers but I was just *drained* by the end of it. Like ā€œoh. wow. well. that was good, but *god*.ā€ Had to stay seated staring at the screen for a good while afterwards with teary eyes extra nominations: The Descent It Follows In A Violent Nature The Night House The Invisible Man Wolf Creek VVitch Suspiria (both) Revenge The Substance

I love disturbing content. Horror movies, psychological thrillers, experimental shit. I am always looking for the next thing to keep me up at night, and very rarely do the suggestions I see online actually stir me beyond a few genuine chills, but climax made my stomach churn, and made me want to cry. Itā€™s one of those movies that I think is so well done, but I canā€™t reccomend it. You get what you sign up for.

I live in Chicago! Depending on where you're staying, there's a bunch of cool things to do as Chicago is a city of neighborhoods. Wicker Park and Logan Square are popular neighborhoods to check out and they're on the cheaper end. California Clipper, Rainbo Club, and Common Decency are bars that are worth checking out. I know that Common Decency has a happy hour 4-6pm 7 days a week. If you're into movies, check out the Music Box Theatre! It's a 95 year old arthouse movie theatre in the Southport Corridor/Lakeview neighborhood that shows independent and second run films. Speaking of Lakeview, Clark Street is pretty popular if you're going to check out Wrigley Field! There are bars up and down the block so you won't need to walk far to find a place to drink at for cheap. If you need any more ideas or recommendations, let me know!

Have you ever dreamt of a better version of yourself? šŸ§ŖāœØ Coralie Fargeatā€™s ā€˜The Substanceā€™ was my most anticipated movie of the year. Itā€™s neon, horror, cerebral, has 80ā€™s vibes, and a synth driven soundtrack. Everything I could want in a movie. This movie eviscerated my brain in the best way possible. I left the theater wondering what in the world did I just experience, but knew I wanted more.Ā  The themes of this movie hit home for me as someone who deals with the pressure of unrealistic beauty standards. Demi Moore gave her all to this movie and her performance blew me away. Margaret Qualley stole the scene every time she was on screen. Dennis Quaid plays a great sleaze ball. The actors understood the assignment. That being said, if youā€™re not a body horror fan, this will be a tough watch. I was definitely squirming in my seat šŸ˜… It also ran a wee bit long for me but do I want to see this again in a packed theatre? Yes. The last movie that made me feel like this was Gaspar NoĆ©ā€™s Climax, and it does have a similar energy to it. Overall, this movie was pure madness but utter genius and I highly recommend you go into this movie with as little knowledge as possible.
