someone put the vhs in for me at age five and it got stuck in my memory for life. scout finch was a character i heavily related to, and I got so lost in the story that I easily could play the movie in my head when I was younger. Also the plot, the music, the vibe of childhood, the twists— amazing. couldn’t ask for a better Peck film.

my first memory is perching on the couch arm in my childhood house and watching the quest for camelot movie when i was about 4 years old. idk why this is so specifically ingrained in my head, but i guess it stuck, because now i have a minor in medieval & renaissance studies!

I was 3 or 4, and hooooo boooy, let me tell you how significant this moment was for me. Thomas gets pushed onto an abandoned ferry by those good-for-nothing Troublesome Trucks and sinks into a marsh. I positively lost my shit. I vividly remember rushing into the dining room where my mom was chatting with her friend, and I would not let them continue talking until they came in and watched it again. I'm sure I wore that part of the tape out replaying it over and over and over again. Looking back now, I think it radicalized me.

I have this very vivid memory of some time, around third grade or so, my family stopped on a roadtrip to check out a garage sale type thing in Virginia or West Virginia. I remember a kid about my age, he lived in the house we stopped at and I remember it feeling sort of like the edge of the world because it was on a hill, high above a valley. The grass was so tall and the ground, sort of maze-like, shown through the grass on paths of warm, dusty brown. The kid with a buzzed head, donning a white wife-beater (wife-lover, rather), I followed through the paths, exploring what felt like a big place. I wonder about them sometimes.

I wish I knew for sure, but making anything helps with the static of not knowing who you are or what you’re doing. a peach pie from scratch. An impromptu jam session with aby instrument, even if it’s just your voice. A quick sketch outside. A photograph. A little stupid air clay sculpture. just make things, that’s why we’re here.

I was a major Starkid fan back in the day, and when video call lessons were affordable, I took one from Jeff Blim, one of the songwriters and actors of the company. To me, Jeff was exactly the mixture of chaotic and talented that I wanted to be. outside of his characters though, he’s actually a really chill teacher. The most important thing I took from that was how to be a character no matter my personal emotional state, which I still use today. I guess sometimes we forget the people we idolize are also just people, and sometimes that sucks, and other times that changes the course of your life. This was one of the life changing times.
