Just temporarily!! the only thing that lets me fully reset when I’m in a bad mental loop is to leave my environment and go somewhere new. Get as far as time and budget will allow and see different streets, landscapes, buildings, whatever. Get a little lost if possible! It forces me to be a lot more present and I return to normal life feeling like I got unplugged and plugged back in.

After you check in with your doctor or therapist to make sure things are good, the next best thing is to get out of your environment or routine. Plan a weekend trip, visit another country, if you’re in the city, go to the mountains, and vice versa. When you feel like nothing brings you joy, that’s when you really have to make yourself go out and do new things, even if you don’t feel like it. Maybe sign up for a new class, go to a museum, volunteer at an animal shelter. Also: make sure you’re getting enough sleep, going outside, seeing friends/family regularly, and eating relatively well! Sleep alone has a huge impact on how I feel.

I’ve learned that after a trip I always need to take 12 to 24 hours to help myself readjust back to my life. I find that giving myself that time to do simple housekeeping chores help me shift back into every day work mode. If something goes wrong in my morning or some point of my day, I stop, take some deep breaths, and say to myself that a bad moment does not make a bad day. Something about that mindful shift really helps me leave that in the past and, be present.

Not as a vacation, just briefly doing your normal life stuff elsewhere. That always helps me ease into a new routine whether it’s waking up earlier or exercising. Stuff is already a bit different, so easier to remove habits that you feel stuck in at home. Personally, I dog sit a lot so that I can easily find longterm places to stay for free. (If you can, realize not everyone has dumb computer jobs and has to be in set locations).

I’ve done this every time I’ve found myself between full time jobs and it really makes the whole time better. You have a little money coming in and you can collect material for your future memoir. Some odd jobs from my past: Axe throwing coach Closet designer Lunch catering delivery Balloon bouquet maker Background extra i found them on big job boards like indeed and also Craigslist (Searching “part time” gets you less garbage results). If you hate it after you start you can just quit! Also if you like pets, signing up for dog walking or petsitting will keep you active and you get to hang out with pets.

I love doing this, it’s wonderfully disorienting. Theres still so much day left afterwards it’s basically a whole new day, like an optical illusion, but of time.

Shopping cart with a bad wheel. Sock slipping down your shoe. The day after you burn your tongue when it’s still all sensitive. An eye twitch. bad toilet paper (thin, scratchy). clothing tag that itches. Really strong static shock that makes you jump. getting perfume in your mouth.
