My first exposure to Stewart Lee and it made me an instant fan. Ending with Robert Pollard is just the icing on the cake.

Went to a big comedy festival awards ceremony because my work was nominated for two awards (we lost both). Took mouse as my date. We were leaving after it finished and got chatting to our friend on the way out and then out walked Stewart Lee who had won the legend of comedy award. He joined our conversation and we had a lovely time chatting to him. One of the organisers of the festival came over to tell us there was an after party and would we like to come. So anyway we ended up walking to the "after party" which was a pub all the way across town just me, Nancy, festival organiser and Stewart Lee. It took a while for the other comics to filter in but they arrived in dribs and drabs until there was about twelve of us. We spent all night in the pub getting really hammered and talking about art and life and Nick Cave all sat around one table eating crisps. Stewart is an exceptionally lovely man. When he left the pub everyone just burst into laughter like "what just happened!!!". One of my favourite nights ever. A few days later Stewart wrote an article about it. Me and Nancy are the "vibrant local artists": https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/apr/03/eat-your-heart-out-will-smith-i-certainly-did-oscars-chris-rock

The sheer amount of standup specials, YouTube/IG/TikTok stars, etc. oversaturate our brains, and I think it dilutes our experience. This is surely true of music for me lately - I need breaks from new things pretty often. I think another symptom of it being so abundant is the more you've seen, the harder it is to be surprised by new styles and personalities. I've been a life-long standup fan for as long as I can remember, and gimmicks and fads have always been a thing. But still, every year, something new grabs my attention. It just takes some digging to find the people that tell the kind of stories that make you laugh. Here are some ones I really liked recently: Kyle Kinane - Dirt Nap Jacqueline Novak - Get On Your Knees Sheng Wang - Sweet & Juicy Brian Simpson - Live From The Mothership Chris Fleming - Hell (As mentioned in other responses, just the best kind of weird) Taylor Tomlinson - Look At You Nate Bargatze (any of his many on Netflix)

One of the few apps with no ephemeral "story" feature or whatever so you don't need to check it every 24 hours. Cherish this.
