This is my go-to "comfort watch" documentary. While I think part of that is having watched it so many times, there is a super casual tone to the movie that I think lends it to be a relaxed watch. The subject material and imagery does border on the disturbing at times, but there is something so...quaint (?) about the subjects of the doc that I've always been just fascinated by them. CW: religious trauma, homophobia, discussions about reproductive rights, spiritual abuse If any of these are triggers, I do NOT recommend watching this movie. Some of the children featured in this movie have been able to escape their upbringing but it definitely is kinda scary watching get brainwashed by these adults.

This is maybe my favorite documentary It’s set in a small classroom in rural France with one teacher and a dozen or so kids of different ages. I love this doc because it has no agenda - we simply observe the relationship between these kids and the teacher who is heading towards retirement. It’s beautiful, it’s tender, it’s honest. It reminds me that kids will just cough with their mouths wide open I love it It tends to live on Kanopy jsyk xoxo ttyl

i’m sure there’s a doc i’ve seen before this one where i “learned more” or whatever but at least in recent memory this one feels like an all-timer; the subject matter is interesting, the interviews are engaging, the found footage is immaculate, and the graphics feel so on-theme that you kinda forget that someone drew that, and that it wasn’t something akin to found footage. also just manages the tone really, really well — the edit tells the story in a way that feels really intuitive and leaves you at the end with a sense of melancholy that you finished it because you just want it to keep going

i don’t watch a lot of documentaries but these are ones i remember finding really informarive crip camp is an AMAZING documentary about the disability rights movement in the US. like seriously so good. covers a bunch of history i never knew before i watched it, like the capitol crawl or when the Black Panthers helped bring food to activists during a 504 sit-in. i was also really lucky to see a talk with Judy Heumann and and James LeBrecht not long after i saw the film, which was very cool also, it’s FREE ON YOUTUBE! so everyone should see it. i linked it other documentaries i can think of: 13th (about mass incarceration and racism) is really good. as is homegrown (about the Jan 6 insurrection), which just came out. both are pretty heavy and very informative; well-made but with different styles
