it’s a study of childlike wonder, finding place/purpose, the conflict between stagnant society vs preservation, the importance of death and grief, ethics vs inner drives, and the dangers of obsession. and it’s beautiful. and it’s cozy.
highly highly recommend. the first time i watched it i was like cool this is fun. and then i just kept thinking about it and it kept popping into my mind.
fun and whimsical, but mature and thoughtful.

a Fundamentally flawed film in its awkward dialogue, pacing and arguably whole concept. however there is just something about it that’s so special – the uncanny nature of the practical/CGI effect combination, the childish portrayal of the monsters, the magical realism / coming of age crossover (never been a more goated genre combo).
put this on and vibe out, maybe have a cry on behalf of your childhood self, listen to animal collective after.

i could be considered the ghibli version of a disney adult but without hoarding themed stuff. i go to gkids every year. ok-
this depends on how you define underrated..
the boy and the heron? so underrated. if you haven’t, watch it because it’s all the things a ghibli movie is: top tier animation, sobering themes, cozy/low stimulation scenes, character decisions that catch you off guard. they’re so good at telling a story.
whisper of the heart is the cutest little low stim comfort film about falling in love. it’s a warm hug like totoro (without the dying mother :/)
the cat returns is not low stim but it’s fun and cheeky in a way the others aren’t. it gives me princess bride vibes i can’t explain why.

A nostalgic, synthy modern fairy tale shot on 16 mm. It’s about three kids on a journey to get their mom a blueberry pie. Visually pleasing and so so comforting to watch.
I have not enjoyed a movie this much in so long! (Stream it on mubi)

its so fun. theres so many types. abundant cheap options to get into. i recommend looking at jet pens website for both articles and pens you can buy. its a topic with tons of history, but is still modern and active. i have a kaweco aluminum sport which is my favorite but i also love the lamy safaris. could go on for hours about this lovely invention

it’s such a awkward marker of a new year. a weird mix of wanting people to celebrate you, but feeling tired of the obligation to thank everyone that only reaches out once a year.
i always find birthdays really hard, and fairly disappointing.
my recommendation is to give yourself grace, and do what makes you happy. i know it’s such a generic rec but this past year on the actual day i just took it easy, treated myself to some takeout, and watched a show in bed. a few days after i got together with friends and we went to a restaurant i love but they’d never really wanted to go to. and then we ate homemade cake and watched a movie.
