purchasing a NAS will not only change the way you store files, but also your life. for those not aware, a network attached storage is a device that houses hard drives. it can be easily accessed if you're on the same network and in some cases even remotely. personally i love my NAS. it's called the bananastand, fans of Arrested Development will be elated, and i use it to archive video projects, music libraries, and family photos. i feel like for any creatives such as photographers, videographers, or really anyone with a plethora of files to manage, the solution is network attached storage. it also doesn't have to be an expensive purchase! chances are you have unused tech sitting around and whether it's an old laptop or discarded drives, there's a tutorial out there that can help you set up your own NAS.

RAID is a technique for making multiple hard drives in an enclosure behave like they're a single drive. Depending on the type of RAID, you can speed up data access or create redundancy for your data. Here's a full list of all the RAID types, but the one you want for preservation is RAID 1. This duplicates your data onto two drives, so if one goes down no data is lost and you can replaces the downed drive with a fresh one seamlessly. You'll need a hard drive enclosure that is capable as being configured as a RAID. The one I use is linked. Beyond that, you'll want to consider the 3-2-1 backup strategy. The "1" represents one off-site backup of your data. My solution for that is Backblaze. I also find the Transmission app is rather useful for preserving media as well.

absolutely the shit and you should be doing it. companies like apple make it difficult on purpose. you want to back up all your photos, but you only get so much icloud storage and then you have to pay out the ass for more. FUCK that. don't listen to them. anytime a company is making it really hard for you to do something, that should clue you in that it is something you need to do. buy a computer that isn't made by apple. buy an external hard drive that isn't made by apple. save your fucking photos to your computer and your external hard drive. delete them off icloud because fuck apple, and what do you need multiple years of digital dead weight hanging onto your daily use device for? you don't. don't let them bait you with nostalgia. put that shit in two different places and then delete it. free up your icloud storage for something actually useful, like if your phone breaks (because we all know it will).

trying to make my internet usage more intentional by using my stationary PC build has been really great honestly. we lost the recipe when we lost the Computer Room in the American family’s home. there is something to be said for only being able to access socials in one room in the house. plus making purchases feels more serious on a big monitor than my phone screen, so financially it’s also been helping in a psychological sense

lately i’ve been really into long distance walking which i define as a walk longer than an hour. i feel like there’s something simple about walking as a mode of transit and i enjoy it so much. also if you’re into pondering walking is a great time to do that. optional: a really good playlist

this coffee shop, located at 888 Madison Ave, is so cute and also tasty. you can come for the coffee and delicious little pastries but above all i think Ralph’s excels at aesthetics. the design of the cafe is incredible stylized and although the indoor seating is limited they also have options outside. i don’t think this place is necessarily a must-visit but if you find yourself nearby i’d personally recommend stopping by :)
