in middle school when my acne was real bad my mom blamed it on my eating habits but our doctor made it clear that there's actually no connection between eating and acne. so keep treating yourself but also use adapalene like everyone's saying, shit works!

Up until the time I was like 17 and my doctor prescribed me an antibiotic and retin-A micro and told me to wash my face with just water and a washcloth and that killed the worst of it. Zinc-based sunscreen helps too. i would recommend looking into switching to EWG verified makeup if you can. Eat less sugar and seed oils and other inflammatory foods. I actually love chicory syrup as an acne treatment which you can only buy from literally one brand on Amazon it works wonders. I also have a Mirena IUD which I think may have been a big game changer tbh

a lot of folks are vitamin d deficient and a common symptom of this deficiency is an increased susceptibility to acne! on top of using tretinoin and simplifying my skincare routine to just washing with water & a gentle cleanser during the evenings, taking vitamin d supplements really helped. this is definitely not a quick fix (takes at least 3 to 6 months to start seeing any changes– it took around 4 months for me to start seeing improvements with my acne) nor the only root cause to annoying acne in your adult years, but it’s definitely worth implementing taking some vitamin d pills to see if it helps reduce the frequency & intensity of your pimples!

also kind of hate this, but as an almost-25-year-old woman with constant cystic acne it makes me feel like i’m taking care of myself as best i can. instead of dropping money on tiktok ”korean” skincare that makes you have “glass skin” i can talk to a literal doctor. although i’m starting to think the idea of “clear skin” is perhaps unattainable for me, i can at least try until i’m too tired to care. i’ve been trying for over ten years now…no end in sight.

little co-rec: if anyone's interested in more literature along these lines, SPARK by John Ratey is a book i read in a PE independent study in high school (bc i didn't want to take gym my last semester) that makes a very compelling argument for integrating physical exercise in your life as a solution to mental health issues. comes to similar conclusions in regard to SSRIs and really any medication in that they can't compare to the results that actually using your body can give you. it really changed my perspective on exercise because i think physical exercise is wrapped up in 'self-improvement' when in reality it should be seen as self-care. and to bring it back to dancing: this is physical exercise that really connects you with the spirit in you and those around you, something that is undeniably a form of care
a study issued last month found that dancing is the most effective way of treating and mitigating depression. Walking, therapy, and yoga also outpaced SSRIs. and if you're saying 'oh this was probably funded by Big Dance', there's no evidence of that and if you're saying 'that's just what a Big Dance shill would say', well honey you're right
