Ok I avoided musicals for a long time because I was convinced I didn’t like them then last summer I had a crush on a Stephen Sondheim stan so naturally I did my research and I’ve now listened to Company like 8 times and did full sob to Being Alive on the streets of downtown Seattle upon first listen… so if my crush is reading this I’m recommending any Stephen Sondheim

okay i think modern musicals have given musicals a really bad rap. but there are so many good shows out there that are really brilliant works of storytelling or songwriting that get overlooked purely on the basis of being musicals. and if you want a place to start stephen sondheim and william finn both have have so many amazing shows.

I regularly go back to Original Cast Album: Company. It’s a treat to get to see Stephen Sondheim in his element, hotboxing the recording studio with cigarettes. And Elaine Stritch.. what an incredible force. I FEEL FOR HER! She just wants to get it right. And then sometimes I’ll double feature with this documentary. John Mulaney is a hilarious Sondheim.

Company is my favorite Sondheim musical. The 2006 revival with Raul Esparza especially. Barcelona ♥️

Currently have three full pages in my notebook! I guess some might call this a gratitude journal LOL but it’s different when I do it.  My brother was telling me about this phenomenon called “target fixation”. It’s a panic reflex that happens when motorcyclists become fixated on a singular object, obstacle, hazard (e.g. a sharp curve on a winding road) and they will unconsciously steer in the direction of the thing they’re trying to avoid because their hands follow their gaze which leads to accidents.  You will follow your gaze so be aware of where you’re looking. Train yourself to seek out pleasure and appreciation! Understanding where + what you derive pleasure from increases your capacity to enjoy things which in turn makes you a more interesting person (imo). I think it’s just as important self-knowledge as understanding your triggers/trauma. It is a daily willingness to be transformed by small things. Sorry for lecturing but I want good things for all of you. Xoxo, meg
