if my bunk ass town has one yours definitely must. that's the #1 place to go if you want to get covered - they're usually starved for content and jump at the chance to cover something local - especially if it's diy and artsy

My city has a small local newspaper and itโ€™s awesome. Once a week they have an artfully designed front cover, a new crossword(my fav) and sudoku, news stories from the week, classifieds, and an events section letting you know all the little happenings throughout that week, with a whole dedicated section for music stuff going on around town. it makes me happy

if you've ever wanted to be dialed in on the pulse of culture, i would recommend reading lit mags in general. want to know about new and up and coming authors, niche film, art galleries, various ephemera: lit mags (viva print media etc etc!!) but specifically college lit mags, whether that be "college review" type poetry or alternative magazines, i would recommend extremely. they're definitely more "rough" around the edges than your typical n+1 but it feels so deeply authentic and wonderful and the rate at which you can find new things is so much higher because no one involved is getting paid so there's a ton of freedom there. anyway, just look up any college and lit mag or publications to the search to find them. BONUS: they are usually free to read in a way that mainstream lit mags are not

depending on your experience level and writing portfolio, a lot of smaller and independent pubs are fairly accessible for budding music journos. if you have a solid story idea and interest in getting into music journalism, editors will be receptive to that! for the portfolio part, reviewing local shows or writing short essays and publishing them on a personal blog or substack can be a great starting point. for publications: iโ€™d reccomend new feeling co-op! Iโ€™ve written for them a few times and theyโ€™re so kind & are all about helping new writers find their voice in music journalism.

spent the last two weeks working on an interactive guide, recommendations database, and digital library (link depot) to help get people off of social media. the first draft is done now, and it's at the link to this post. it's still very much a work in progress (the library is especially thin atm) - which is why i wanted to share it here before unleashing it upon my IRL friends and the general public. i welcome any and all feedback, bug reports, and suggestions for things to add. i will be pushing updates to it out like a madman in the coming weeks, so be sure to check back every so often to see new additions to the database and library. additionally, i am still on the hunt for newsletters from local venues / community organizations / magazines / newspapers, etc. the only cities i have remotely covered so far are nyc, orlando, denver, brisbane, and little bits of worcester and chicago. if you know anything in your area that fits the bill, send it my way!
