i know it's basic but keeping a daily journal has been one of the most grounding things in my life. you don't need to shell out $$$ on a travelers' notebook and a snazzy pen, but just repeating the daily act of physically writing your thoughts down is a wonderful thing. i keep a daily recollection/diary sort of thing along with a sort of freeform commonplace book where i jot down thoughts or lyric ideas or cool words i read and had to look up definitions of. it's nerd shit but the sort of positive affirming nerd shit that everyone needs at least a little bit of. also the amount of stuff you forget over the course of a week/month/year is astounding -- doing this is fun in part because you can read through your past entries (good and bad) again with fresh eyes.

this is only a habit i have picked up in the last year, but it has made a world of difference. i will write about things that i am thinking about or stuff i need to do or just chronicle my day. i just find it very grounding or like a reset to my thought processes.

instead i keep a notebook in my bag and write down anything that strikes me as interesting: something funny a prof said, a lyric and why i like it, an interesting dream, a recurrent thought i've had for a few days... helped me a lot more than journaling and i make it fun by diversifying it, which the journaling format lacks kinda? i mean, doing sketches and planning website pages and writing down thoughts abt a book i just finished and making editing decisions blablaboablabla ANYTHING U EVER THINK OF! that helped me uncover patterns and common themes in my life way more than journaling but ig it does amount to the same concept πŸ˜“

it has a slightly nebulous definition and might not be all that revolutionary of a concept but it consistently brings joy to my life. i use it as a collection of quotes & lines from film, books, music, and any other form of art and writing that resonated with me. sometimes i’ll just write down the quote, other times i’ll expand on why it’s meaningful to me. but now i have a collection of other people’s ideas that make me feel seen and speak to me to look at whenever i need it. using a physical journal also makes it more tangible, like i’m actually holding the ideas in my hands.

as far as material things go... - falling back in love with reading for pleasure and not for academic requirement - flat-wound guitar strings because they last forever and sound fantastic even when they're dead - old goofy mugs; it's like a more buttoned-up equivalent to finding that out of pocket t-shirt at the thrift and i love how much character they add

i've had this same problem and the only solution i've found (granted there's not a crazy amount of options i've seen where i live) is looking at plato's closet or the thrift for stuff. old j.crew corduroys were all high waisted, bunch of older rustler/wrangler denim, etc. as far as new options go i'm in the same boat as you because i'm tired of gambling on whatever length they are 😭
