I'm admittedly a sucker for a local paper, and that increases tenfold when it shines light on otherwise underreported stories through a progressive lens. In Gainesville, this manifests in The Gainesville Iguana. You can find them at pretty much any record store, library, etc... for free!!!! The ads also expose you to local establishments and groups you might otherwise not have known about. There's a sense of community that emanates from the paper that you don't get in any of your other standard publications.

My city has a small local newspaper and it’s awesome. Once a week they have an artfully designed front cover, a new crossword(my fav) and sudoku, news stories from the week, classifieds, and an events section letting you know all the little happenings throughout that week, with a whole dedicated section for music stuff going on around town. it makes me happy

I grew up delivering newspaper with my parents to make ends meet. Thanksgiving was interesting because the paper was thick with Black Friday ads. I went to the dollar store yesterday and saw a Sunday paper for only $2. It was thick with Black Friday ads. Support local journalism so we can have a Secret Third Thing for information, besides social media influencers & major publications like NYT and WaPo.

if my bunk ass town has one yours definitely must. that's the #1 place to go if you want to get covered - they're usually starved for content and jump at the chance to cover something local - especially if it's diy and artsy

It can give new perspective on what's actually around you. A lot of the time, the veil of the windshield and fiberglass can keep the outside world as more of a backdrop instead of a lived-in space.
