1 day into building a dvd collection because I got kinda freaked out by the idea of AN ENTIRE MOVIE being lost to time. On a more positive note, McCabe & Mrs. Miller and Elvira, Mistress of the Dark are now in my possession. What other movies do I absolutely need?

Also, look into the ones that can get to be in the platforms with the most expensive subscriptions. For me, that's Disney +. Eventually there'll be people who simply wouldn't be able to afford it.

I would go for the movies that have more of a scarce rotation due to the gatekeeping companies do. I've noticed this with Lionsgate (they tried gatekeeping with Lionsgate +, but they didn't succeed, so now they rotate movies among platforms. However, because they pretty much don't have an archive, they could get lost forever assuming they go broke, which could happen if we look at the fact that nobody cared for the platform they had. In my country, you can't find The Great anywhere because of it). Another one is LAIKA. They made Coraline, Paranorman. I notice they end up in rotation among platforms for a while, then they take it away. Dangerous game. They take a long time to make their movies because it's stop-motion. The funding, from what I hear is difficult. Wouldn't want them to disappear. MGM Studios is another one. They have MGM+ or Paramount +. Their own platform that literally nobody ever talks about 😭. But that's precisely why I get scared they could end up as Lionsgate. Even if a movie is in high rotation among platforms, it's not a guarantee it won't disappear completely. Even worse when it's being gatekept from people through a platform seemingly nobody uses. Mubi has cool, relatively niche movies. I would say investigate what kind of movies they have, what kind of movies you would like to see in your collection. Mubi is great, but independent. So is A-24. Dangerous.

there was a woman in the 1970-80s that recorded all tv broadcasts (news/ads/movies/specials) for a decade i believe for a specific channel. the recording ran 24/7 and this required tons of vhs tape rotations. maybe you should try something like that—just dedicate a decade of your life physically recording all kinds of media.

i fear that one day all these online movie streaming sites are going to either remove the movies i love or just eventually become obsolete to some other, newer form of movie-watching. so ive started collecting the movies i love on dvd. if i ever see one in a thrift store, it’s in my hands neooow. plus, i love having my own copy. it feels like an homage to myself.

scoured the internet for two weeks trying to find a beautiful old danish movie that literally doesn’t exist online. finally found a comment on facebook that mentioned the movie, messaged the person (a sweet old lady), walked her through the process of burning her dvd into a copy and getting it processed into a digital file to send to me. It was such an archaic file type that I had to download old software that probably gave my computer viruses but it was the best movie ever and i would do it again now watching netflix feels too easy

My Texan girlfriend introduced me to this beautiful experience. Speaking from personal experience, if your northern sensibilities make you believe that skillet queso is not the perfect accompaniment to cozy seats and the silver screen, you cannot be more wrong. Currently hoping that our DC theatre will still have the witches brew for me to sip on as I rewatch wicked for the fourth time.
